If you are looking for one last hurrah before the summer holidays slip away, Fowey is ready for you. This August bank holiday brings family activities, harbour food, local markets, pub entertainment and a cruise ship call on Monday. And, coming just after regatta week, you will find a town still carrying the buzz of a brilliant few days on and off the water.

If you have children with you, Izzy Richards’ Fowey Mystery Trails are a good place to start. Available from Fowey Aquarium on Town Quay, the two self-guided trails turn familiar walks into simple story-led adventures: one from Town Quay to Caffa Mill, the other to Readymoney Cove. They cost £3 per trail or £5 for both, with proceeds supporting Izzy’s fundraising for the World Scout Jamboree in Poland. You can also drop into Fowey Library’s Extraordinary Explorers summer reading challenge, which gives children a free activity to enjoy between beach time, walks and wet-weather plans.

Food is always worth building into your Fowey plans, and you'll be spoilt for choice. On Friday, Siam Kitchen brings Thai food to Caffa Mill, while Saturday brings Tipsy Dough Pizza to the Red Rocket. Add in Fowey’s restaurants, pubs and coffee shops, from pub lunches to cosy evening tables, and eating out becomes part of the pleasure of your day or weekend in town.

When evening comes, you can head to The Ship Inn, where entertainment is planned for Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus the regular pub quiz on Sunday night. Check its Facebook page for the latest details. Slightly outside town, The Press Gang are due at The New Inn, Tywardreath, on Saturday night if you fancy taking your night out a little further. Another one further afield is the beer festival at The Fisherman’s Arms in Golant, giving you one more reason to explore beyond Fowey during the long weekend.

If art is your thing, Fowey’s two galleries offer a quieter, calmer moment in the bank holiday bustle. At The Old Bank, the Confluence exhibition continues until 28 August, followed by Saul Cathcart’s September exhibition from 1 September. Over at Fowey River Gallery, the Regatta Exhibition runs until 6 September, giving you another reason to step off the street and into the town’s creative side.

On bank holiday Monday, you can browse Fowey Artisan Market on the quay and Fowey Craft Fair in the church. Together, they make an ideal place to pick up local treats, gifts and keepsakes. You may also spot cruise ship MS Deutschland, also known as World Odyssey, as she calls into Fowey from Portsmouth on her way to Saint-Malo. She is due to berth at 8am and depart at 6pm, with a guideline capacity of up to 650 passengers.

Beyond the listed events, you can enjoy Fowey at your own pace. Start Friday morning with Gather & Flo Yoga at The Old Bank Fowey, with sessions at 7:30am and 9am, then maybe make time to get out on the water, whether you hire a boat from the quay or join one of Seafari’s thrilling trips. Back on land, you can watch the river life, browse the independent shops, settle in for a coffee if the weather turns, or take a quieter pause at Sunday services at St Fimbarrus and the Anchor Church at Fowey Gallants. However you shape your weekend, Fowey gives you plenty of ways to slow down and stay a little longer.

The carnival processions, car show, sailing, gig racing and fireworks of regatta week have passed, but their energy is still in the air, leaving Fowey busy, spirited and ready for one more summer weekend.
