In my ongoing series, “Inside Small Businesses,” I take a peek behind the scenes of some of Fowey’s most creative enterprises - exploring the passion, people and purpose that shape them. This week, I sat down with Will Maher, founder of WM Designs in Fowey, a graphic designer whose boutique studio pairs global credentials with Fowey heart.

When I visited the Windmill office of WM Designs, I felt it straight away: calm, clean, thoughtful energy. The kind of space where every frame, font and photograph seems perfectly, effortlessly placed. It’s the workspace and calling card of Fowey-based designer Will Maher, whose approach to branding and web design has turned his Fowey based design studio into a global creative force.
Will’s path to design independence started in the Ribble Valley, Lancashire, where his first ventures into freelance work came less from glossy briefs and more from grit and resourcefulness. “I wanted control over my own destiny,” he recalls, smiling. After a BTEC in Graphic Arts and a degree from Leeds Metropolitan University, Will turned down the agency route, opting instead for self-employment. Now, 15 years later, a decision that has defined both his business and his belief in doing things differently.
His earliest commission? Designing football scarves for a textiles designer, followed by marketing materials for an engineering firm. Neither glamorous, but both foundational. They gave him time to shape the creative business he truly wanted to build. The pivotal moment came when a local bridal boutique, Lulu Brown, entrusted him with their entire marketing identity. Suddenly, Will wasn’t just designing; he was storytelling. “That project was where I really cut my teeth,” he says. “It taught me how to create a brand that people connect with emotionally.”
That thread of emotional resonance, detail and trust runs through everything WM Designs now delivers. From Fowey to LA and pretty much everywhere in between, Will and his team have crafted brands and websites for clients as varied as the Fowey River Gallery, Perfect Charter in Majorca, MVE Global Talent agency and even global movie brands. Yet, as he puts it, “the attention we give the local shop owner is the same as we give to a global brand.”
What makes WM Designs special is that boutique authenticity: the sense that design is personal. Clients don’t get passed off to account managers or layers of production; they speak directly to the creatives doing the work. And those creatives, Will insists, are everything. “Jack,” he grins, referencing his young designer, “is phenomenal - he has grown into his craft beautifully.”
Beyond deadlines and design boards, Will is also part of something quintessentially coastal: the RNLI crew in Fowey. “When I moved here, I didn’t really know many people,” he says. “Joining the crew was a way to meet others and give something back.” His eyes soften when recalling the rescue of a terrified young paddleboarder: “Seeing that fear change to relief when we arrived, that made me really understand exactly why we do it.” Balancing rescue calls with running a business might sound impossible, but for Will it’s just another rhythm of life by the sea. “People understand. That’s what living in a coastal community is all about.”

Cornwall wasn’t always the plan. Lancashire-born, Will jokes that Tinder brought him here “quite literally!” During a 2021 holiday, he switched his location to Cornwall, matched with Hannah (now his wife), they had their first date on Perranporth Beach, and by November had packed up his northern life for good. “Do I think of Fowey as home?” he says without pause. “Absolutely.” This spring, the couple will welcome their first child, and another new chapter in the story begins.
In the day-to-day of WM Designs, no two mornings look exactly the same, though Will insists on one constant: detail. “The small things matter - spacing, fonts, design, image balance, tone. It all works together to tell the story.” That obsessive precision underpins his growing portfolio: over 150 live websites, with 15 builds underway at any one time for roughly 400 active clients. It’s an astonishing feat for a team of three, managed with a quiet discipline, powered by tools like Asana and a shared respect for doing things properly. “Good design takes time,” he says simply. “And it shows.”
When asked how he defines WM Designs’ aesthetic, he pauses just long enough to make clear that it’s intentional. “Clean. Confident. Brand-led. We design sites that feel like the businesses they represent. Photography leads our work real, rich imagery supported by typography and copy that complements, not competes. It’s about clarity, not clutter.” That philosophy has won them work that would make big agencies envious, and yet Will remains fiercely protective of his independence. Growth is on the horizon, yes, but deliberate, purposeful growth. “Four or five people, maybe. Enough to keep things personal.”
What fuels him? “I live and breathe design,” he says with a shrug that belies how true it is. This isn’t just a job, it’s a passion. From typography trends to aerial photography, he surrounds himself with people who share that passion for design. “Ultimately, we help businesses bring their brands to life,” he says. “We don’t just make things look good; we help them feel right.”
That, it seems, is Will’s real signature: the quiet confidence of someone who doesn’t just design brands, he shapes how they’re seen.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Will over the last few months on a project and I can honestly say he’s one of the most talented brand designers I’ve ever worked with. If you’re mulling over a new website or brand refresh, reach out for a conversation. The value Will and his team bring is nothing short of extraordinary.
