Friday in Fowey: yoga, art and late-night music

Friday begins gently with Gather & Flo Yoga’s Feel Good Friday session, setting the tone for an easy start to the weekend. As the day moves towards evening, attention turns to The Old Bank, where a new exhibition by Saul Cathcart opens with a preview on Friday 4 September from 5pm onwards. His work follows the light of the Cornish coast: wild, atmospheric, hard to describe, and loved by so many who know this stretch of water and sky.

Fowey River Gallery is also worth a stop this weekend, as its Regatta Exhibition enters its final few days, giving visitors one last chance to catch the show before it closes.

After the galleries, stay in town for supper, drinks and live music. If you are looking for a fish supper, The Safe Harbour is serving Fish Friday from 6pm to 8pm, while Siam Kitchen brings Thai food to Caffa Mill on Friday evening for something fragrant, fresh and full of flavour. It is only one of many fabulous places to eat in Fowey – if you’re looking for inspiration, visit our ‘Where to Eat’ page for inspiration.

While you’re here - make an evening of it in the town’s restaurants, pubs and bars, then settle in for music later on, with Simon Smith at The Ship Inn from 9pm and The Payback at The Galleon Inn at the same time. As always, check directly with venues before setting out.

Saturday in Fowey: stretch, stroll and stay for supper

Saturday starts brightly with Gather & Flo Yoga’s Rise & Sparkle Vinyasa Flow, a morning class with just enough energy to carry you into the day. From 12.30pm, slightly further afield, The New Inn Tywardreath takes centre stage with its charity dog show in aid of Keeping Hope Dog Rescue Cornwall. Each class costs £1 to enter, and there’ll be an outside bar, a barbecue, local stalls, face painting, an ice cream van and rosettes for the winners - a properly cheerful afternoon with a good cause at its heart.

As the day rolls into evening, The Safe Harbour moves from pub classic to indulgent pairing with its Wine and Cheese Night from 6pm, including a free cheese board with the first bottle of wine. Later, Matt Bowen brings live music to The Ship Inn from 9pm.

Sunday in Fowey: Sunday roast, keys and a final quiz

Sunday begins quietly, with space for worship before the town tilts back towards music and quiz-night chatter. Anchor Anglican Church meets at 10am at Fowey Gallants Sailing Club, with coffee from 9.30am and the gathering usually ending by 11.30am. At St Fimbarrus Church, Morning Worship is listed for 10.30am, with a traditional 9am Book of Common Prayer service also on the day’s pattern.

By afternoon, The Ship Inn brings back its much loved Sunday roasts (brilliant roasts also available at The Lugger, Haveners and The Harbour Hotel). Back at The Ship Inn, Charlie will be there with his 'keys' to entertain from 3pm, setting the tone for a laid-back Sunday session, before the pub quiz brings the weekend to a close at 7pm. Check directly with the pub before you go, particularly if you are planning your evening around the quiz.

Coming up next week in Fowey

Keep an eye on the harbour on Tuesday 8 September, when the SeaDream II cruise ship is listed as being in port from 7am. Later in the week, Fowey Networking returns after the summer break with a lunchtime gathering at Nature’s Window Brewery & Taproom from 12pm to 2pm on Thursday 10 September. Tickets are free, but you will need to book a place to attend.

That's the charm of Fowey in early September: yoga mats by morning, strolling by the river by lunchtime, guitars after dark, and enough small-town warmth to make the whole weekend feel chilled. For the latest Fowey events, listings, updates and booking details, visit our What's On page.
