On 25th May, the beautiful garden of the Harbour Hotel Fowey, on the Esplanade, will be the setting for a traditional fete full of bunting, games, and good cheer, as a group of six local friends come together to raise funds for one of Cornwall's most beloved children's charities. The group, who have cheerfully named themselves the Fowey Fun'raisers, are hosting the Fowey Fun'raisers Fete in aid of Little Harbour Children's Hospice. They are hoping the whole community, locals and visitors alike, will come along and join in the fun.

The Fowey Harbour Hotel has generously given its garden free of charge for the occasion, and it is hard to imagine a more fitting backdrop. The hospice, based in Porthpean, has been a place of comfort and care for families across the South West for many years, and the harbour town has long felt a quiet kinship with its work. That the hotel has chosen to open its doors in support of such a cause speaks to exactly the kind of community spirit that makes Fowey so special.

Running from 11am to 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May, the event promises something for everyone. There will be traditional fete stalls and games, a mini disco, balloon modelling, a BBQ and cream teas. Entertainment on the day will include a local shanty group and a Gujarati dance group, bringing colour, music and no shortage of spirit to the harbour garden setting. It is, in every sense, a fete for all ages. "We just wanted to create something joyful," say the Fun'raisers. "Something that feels like a proper community day out, where everyone can have fun and know that every penny they spend is going somewhere meaningful."

And meaningful it certainly is. Little Harbour provides specialist care and support to children with life-limiting conditions and their families. Its aim, making the most of short and precious lives, says everything you need to know about the extraordinary work that happens there. For families navigating some of life's hardest moments, Little Harbour offers far more than medical care. It is a warm, comfortable, family-centred space where siblings can be siblings, parents can breathe, and children can simply be children. The emotional support offered to families, before, during and after, is by all accounts second to none. But providing that level of care, day in and day out, comes at an enormous annual cost, and it is donations and community fundraising that make so much of it possible.

On the day of the fete, no booking is needed. Simply turn up, buy a cream tea, have a go on the stalls and enjoy the sunshine (fingers firmly crossed). If you can only pop by for a few minutes, there will be donation buckets and phone payment options at the gate, so no one need leave without contributing something. Look out for volunteers in their official Fun'raisers t-shirts, who will be happy to answer any questions. You can also find out more about the wider work of Children's Hospice South West at the Children’s Hospice South West website.

The Fowey Fun'raisers Fete is free to attend, with all money raised going directly to Little Harbour. Whether you are a Fowey regular or just passing through on the Bank Holiday, this is the sort of event that will leave you feeling glad you came. Good fun, good food, and the knowledge that you have helped make a difference to children and families who need it most.
