Some achievements deserve a small moment of recognition, and some deserve a full-blown celebration. For Fowey, the news that local Explorer Scout Isabelle Richards has been selected to represent Cornwall and the United Kingdom at the 2027 World Scout Jamboree in Gdansk falls firmly into the second category.

Known as Izzy to her friends and family, she has been part of the Scouting world for over ten years. She began as a Beaver, that first tentative step into scouting, a step that would go on to shape her in ways that are only now becoming fully visible. From there, she progressed through Cubs and Scouts, each stage building on the last, until she arrived where she is today: an Explorer Scout with the Menabilly Unit of Polkerris Scout Group, and one of the most decorated young Scouts in the county.

Her current award, the Chief Scout's Diamond, is the second-highest accolade in Scouting. It is not the kind of thing handed out lightly. But Izzy is not stopping there. She is now working towards the King's Scout Award, the top achievement for Explorer Scouts, a distinction so demanding and so rare that those whose awards are approved in a given year are invited to celebrate at an event held at Windsor Castle the following year, traditionally on the Sunday nearest to St George's Day. To reach it, Scouts must complete a sustained programme of skill-building, physical activity, community service, and international experience, all before their 25th birthday. Very few young people ever get there. Izzy is on her way.

The 2027 Jamboree will play a meaningful part in that journey. International activities count towards the King's Scout Award requirements, and attending a World Jamboree as a UK representative is about as international as it gets. But to reduce the trip to a box-ticking exercise would be to miss the point entirely. World Scout Jamborees are extraordinary gatherings, bringing together young people from across the globe, united by curiosity, friendship, and a shared belief in making the world a better place. For a young woman from a small Cornish town to be selected to attend as a UK representative is the kind of opportunity that stays with a person for life. For Izzy, it represents the natural next chapter in a Scouting story that has already taken her further than most. For Fowey, it’s a proud moment.

There is, of course, a practical mountain to climb before she boards that plane. Representing the UK at a World Jamboree comes with a fundraising target of £3,500, and Izzy is asking for the community's support to help make it happen. If you have ever wanted to do something small that genuinely makes a big difference in a young person's life, this could be your moment. Izzy has given ten years to Scouting, building skills, earning awards, and quietly getting on with being exactly the kind of person a community should be proud of.  Every contribution, however modest, brings her one step closer to the Jamboree. Businesses interested in sponsorship are also warmly encouraged to get in touch with Izzy’s dad, Geoff Richards
